After intense negotiations, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to postpone its decision on the new Net Zero Framework. Now it’s time to look ahead.

The delay prolongs uncertainty for global shipping – but also opens a crucial window to strengthen international collaboration and craft a more ambitious strategy ahead of next year’s decisive round of talks.

A missed moment for clarity

‍After several days of debate in London, IMO member states failed to reach consensus on adopting the Net Zero Framework. While ambition levels are gradually aligning, fundamental disagreements remain over the policy mechanisms and timelines needed to drive real transition.“A decision to adopt now would have provided the much needed predictability our industry needs to continue developing and investing boldly in green solutions. The postponement is not what we hoped for, but it reinforces the urgency of accelerating change from the bottom up.” says Maritime CleanTech CEO Ada Martine Jakobsen.

More time to build momentum

‍Although the lack of progress marks a setback, it also creates space for renewed action. The months ahead must be used to forge a unified campaign and build broader international support for adopting a strong and credible Net Zero Framework next year.Maritime CleanTech will continue collaborating with partners in Norway, Europe, and across the global maritime ecosystem to validate, scale, and close the cost gap between conventional and zero-emission technologies – accelerating their path toward full market readiness.

‍Across Norway and Europe, pioneering projects are already setting examples for the global maritime sector. By demonstrating real-world solutions, industry leaders can help shape the global framework when the IMO reconvenes.“The outcome of the MEPC meeting only highlights why continued leadership from capable innovators and early movers is critical. We must continue to build momentum so we can influence the global outcome when it matters most” Jakobsen notes.
